Master's degree in nursing or physician assistant studies with the requisite degree.
Position Summary
The Simulation Educator is a key participant with the University of Georgia School of Medicine's undergraduate (UME) and graduate medical education (GME) programs, assisting the Director of Simulation in planning and leading simulation activities, providing faculty education, participating in research, and working towards achieving Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) accreditation for the simulation center. This position reports to the Director of Simulation and supervises simulation technicians and student workers that support the simulation center.
In addition, the Simulation Educator develops and supervises delivery of procedural training for pre-clerkship, clerkship students and residents. This includes directing simulation technicians and others in set up of procedure training events and logistics. This individual interacts with faculty to continuously improve procedural training. The Simulation Educator also collaborates with the Director of Interprofessional Education (IPE) to help develop events and logistics and works closely with residency Program Directors to develop appropriate training events and assist with coordinating logistics.
The position is a non-tenure track appointment at the rank of clinical instructor, clinical assistant, clinical associate, or clinical professor commensurate with experience and academic credentials.
Additional Requirements
- Candidates with a master's degree must document exceptional accomplishments in their field and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.
- Licensure to practice in Health Profession in Georgia (or clear-cut ability to obtain licensure).
- A minimum of five years of clinical experience.
- Proven success in delivering undergraduate and/or graduate medical education.
- History of health care simulation education.
- History of leadership.
- Willingness to pursue Certification as a Health Care Simulation Educator.
- Strong technical and computer skills.
- Flexible and able to adapt to different work and schedule demands.
- Intellectual curiosity.
- A can-do attitude and love of logistics.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Curriculum Leadership: Lead and contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of simulation-based (including procedure training) instructional content across pre-clerkship and clerkship phases of the MD curriculum and residency programs.
- Teaching and Facilitation: Deliver high-quality simulation-based education using standardized patients, high-fidelity manikins, and hybrid modalities.
- Development: Provide training and mentorship to faculty, clinical preceptors, and standardized patients on effective use of simulation and debriefing techniques.
- Assessment: Contribute to the design of, and assess, learner competencies through simulation-based evaluations.
- Scholarship: Engage in educational research and scholarship in medical simulation, clinical skills, or related fields.
- Interprofessional Collaboration: Contribute to simulation activities involving other health professions (e.g., nursing, PA, pharmacy) to foster team-based care.
- Committee Service: Participate in relevant institutional and curricular committees.
Breakdown of Responsibilities:
30% - Simulation Curriculum Development and Implementation
- Evaluates the needs for simulation and procedural skills-based activities to support learning for students, residents, and faculty.
- Collaborates with all stakeholders to contribute to the development of educationally sound simulation and procedural skills curriculum.
- Collaborates with all stakeholders and programs to create an inter-professional simulation platform.
- Works collaboratively with the Curriculum Oversight Committee for continued integration of simulation in the curriculum.
- Prepares procedural and simulation scenario case formats and supporting documents.
- Develops and/or edits full-scale simulation scenarios using high fidelity simulators.
- Develops and leads simulation activities, including faculty and student prebriefing, participation in simulation scenarios as operator or embedded participant, faculty, and student debriefing.
30% - Simulation Team Development and Program Improvement
- Conducts orientation, continuing professional development and mentoring for new simulation facilitators, educators, and technicians in simulation education best practices, including educational techniques utilizing simulation, debrief and other activities as appropriate for the institution or appropriate for the individual.
- Instructs faculty and others on technical aspects of operating simulators and equipment.
- Supervises simulation technicians and student workers.
- Identifies and promotes education and training best practices that enhance clinical outcomes and team performance.
- Assists in development and implementation of protocols and policies related to simulation center operations in collaboration with invested parties in UME and GME.
- Establishes and maintains use of policies and safety guidelines.
- Supports the short-, intermediate-, and long-term teaching, research, and operational goals of the program.
- Participates in budget creation and management.
- Aligns program development in accordance with Society for Simulation in Healthcare Accreditation best practices.
- Collaborates closely with the Director of Simulation to lay out an accreditation timeline for the School of Medicine.
25% - Procedure Training in Pre-clerkship, Clerkship, and Residency Education
- Develops and leads procedural training for UME students.
- Provides instruction in procedural skills labs for UME and GME learners.
- Coordinates with curriculum leaders and faculty to integrate procedural training into the overall curriculum.
- Trains faculty and staff and leads logistical planning for events.
10% - Interprofessional Education
- Works with Director of IPE to coordinate IPE events and incorporate simulation as appropriate.
- Participates in IPE development and delivery.
- Works with residency program directors to coordinate IPE and other simulations events.
5% - Other duties as assigned.
- Identifies grants and funding sources to ensure sustainability and growth of simulation program.
- Coordinates community outreach and training activities.
- Serves on relevant committees and task forces as assigned.
